APOLLO MUSIC DISCOVERY
Apollo is an app to help you explore and discover new music. No recommendations from algorithms– just a self directed expedition deep into the musical genre- space. Apollo is your rocketship.
Every noise at once
This is a screenshot of everynoise.com, the impetus of this project. It’s an “algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1531 genres by Spotify.”

Genres are oriented by objective sonic qualities– up is more electronic, down is more organic; left is sonically denser, and right is more sparse.

Apollo is essentially an interface that allows you to dive in and move around this map, listening and discovering new favorites as you go.
The Interface
To begin exploring, you have to choose a starting point.
This step allows you to select the qualities of music you’re looking for, and will determine where you start listening.
This is the heart of the app, featuring a simple interface with an optional overlay to use while you’re learning.
Rather than just pressing “next",  Apollo allows you to choose exactly which qualities you’d like to hear more of in the next song that’s played.
As you explore, you’ll be able to learn more about the artists you’re listening to– a crucial piece of music discovery and appreciation
While “skipping” a song, you have the option to select for more than one quality.
Ultimately, you’ll come across a song that you love. By pressing the like button, you’ll keep listening to that artist, and bookmark the song to use as a point to come back to and start exploring from later.
